Mirabai Chanu Qualifies For 2022 Commonwealth Games – The Indian ace weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has qualified for the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games. The qualification was confirmed after Mirabai Chanu won the gold medal in the 55kg weight category at Singapore Weightlifting International.

This was Mirabai Chanu’s first attempt in the 55 kg weight category. At Singapore Weightlifting International, Mirabai Chanu recorded 191 kg (86kg+105kg) to win the gold medal. Australian, Jessica Sewastenko secured the silver medal. She lifted 167kg (77kg+90kg). 

It was a pretty uncompetitive match for Mirabaias she won with a comfortable gap of 24 kgs. 

It has been a good 12 months for Mirabai Chanu. At the recently held Tokyo Olympics, the Manipur girl became the first Indian weightlifter to win the silver medal. 

Since 2014, Chanu has been participating in the 48kg division. In this category, Mirabai managed to win many medals at Commonwealth Games and World Championships. The 26-year-old Mirabai Chanu was honored with the Padma Shri award and the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award from the Indian government in 2018. 

Mirabai Chanu has qualified for Birmingham Commonwealth Games in the 49 kg category. She is also planning to enter into the new 55 kg category to improve India’s prospects of winning more gold medals at the Commonwealth Games.

More Weightlifters Qualify For the Commonwealth Games 2022

Till now, twelve weightlifters have qualified for the Commonwealth Games after winning medals at Singapore Weightlifting International. Along with Mirabai Chanu, Bindyarani Devi, Ragala Venkat Rahul, Bindyarani Devi also qualified for the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022.

Thakur and Ragala in men’s 96 kg category, Popy Hazarika and Usha Kumara in women’s 64kg and 87 kgs respectively qualified for the Birmingham CWG. 

The 2022 Commonwealth Games are scheduled in Birmingham from 28th July to 8th August 2022.
