Mary Kom has opted out to participate in the trials for the upcoming IBA Elite Women’s World Boxing Championships or the 2022 Asian Games. Instead, the 39-year-old will be looking to successfully defend her 2018 gold medal at Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022.
The six-time world champion MC Mary Kom has decided to opt-out of the World Championships and Asian Games and focus on the upcoming Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022.
The World Championship trials are starting from Monday. The greatest Indian boxer Mary Kom has decided to focus on Commonwealth Games and allow the younger generation to make their name and grab international exposure in her absence. The 39-year-old boxer won the gold medal at the 2018 Gold Coast CWG.
Mary Kom conveyed her message to the Boxing Federation of India. BFI made the news official via Instagram. The statement read as
“I would like to withdraw to allow the younger generation to make a name for themselves on the international stage and get exposure and experience of major tournaments. I want to focus on the preparation for the Commonwealth Games only”

Reacting to this news, the BFI President Ajay Singh said,
Mary Kom has been the torchbearer for Indian boxing for the last two decades and has inspired countless boxers and sportspersons across the world. We completely respect her decision, and it is a testimony of her champion character to make way for the other boxers.
The BFI President is also confident and proud of the bench strength Indian boxing possesses at the moment. While expressing this, Ajay Singh said that he is confident that the younger generation will make the nation proud in the game of boxing. He also gave legend MC Mary Kom the best wishes for her CWG preparations.
The boxing tournaments are stacked up one after the other in upcoming months. The World Championships are scheduled in Instanbul from 6th to 21st May. It is followed by Birmingham Commonwealth Games from 28th July and Asian Games in China from 10th September.
