Geraint Thomas, a popular Welshman has confirmed that he will race at the Commonwealth Games 2022. Geraint Thomas will return and represent Wales for the first time since the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games. Geraint Thomas won the 2014 Glasgow men’s cycling event and also secured a bronze medal in the individual time trials.
Geraint Thomas failed to defend his title at Gold Coast Commonwealth Games 2018. Geraint Thomas had his Sky team commitments due to which he decided to skip the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Just three months later, Thomas went on to win the Tour de France 2018.
Geraint Thomas made the official announcement on Twitter. In his tweet, he confirmed his participation at Birmingham Commonwealth Games and also described the 2014 win as one of the highlights of his career.
Geraint Thomas said,
“Dydd Gŵyl Dewi Hapus!
“Seems like a good day to confirm I’ll hopefully be competing at the Commonwealth Games again this year. Winning the road race in 2014 is up there with the best days of my career.
“It’s gonna be very special competing in the Welsh jersey again.”
It will be the first time since 2014, Geraint Thomas will be seen in the Welsh jersey. Thomas is the most successful cyclist for Wales. He has three world championships, two Olympic medals, two commonwealth games medals and Tour de France 2018 title to his name.
At the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games, a time trial race will take place on 4th August in Wolverhampton while the men’s road race will be contested on 7th August. The Commonwealth Games will be concluded on 8th August 2022.
The 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games is scheduled from 28th July to 8th August.
